About the European Day of Languages

Across Europe, 700 million Europeans, represented in the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, are encouraged to learn more languages. Language learning can take place at any age, both inside and outside the classroom. The Council of Europe believes that linguistic diversity is an essential part of our continent's rich cultural heritage and a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding. Therefore, the Council works to promote multilingualism throughout Europe.

Since September 26, 2001, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated at the initiative of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
